Oregon Carbon Monoxide Legislation

Oregon’s Lofgren and Zander Memorial Act (House Bill 3450) went into effect Thursday, July 1. The new law requires Oregon properties to install carbon monoxide detectors if the property is sold or rented after July 1, 2010. The exception is for properties that are all electric without an attached garage.
The law was spurred by the 2008 death of the Lofgren family in Colorado and Kara Zander in Beaverton, OR. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study found that “unintentional carbon monoxide exposure accounts for an estimated 15,000 emergency department visits and 500 unintentional deaths in the United States each year.” Currently, there are twenty states with laws requiring carbon monoxide detectors with more on the way.
While this is an added expense for property managers, many feel that it’s well worth it. What do you think?
