New York’s Bedbug Disclosure Act

This is one of those things that you need to know….but don’t really want to know!
In New York Gov. Paterson just signed into law the Bedbug Disclosure Act which requires landlords to tell prospective residents if there is a one-year history of bedbugs – now New York renters have the right to know about past bedbug infestations.
Bedbugs have been in the news quite a bit this year, but bedbug-related calls (reports / complaints to New York’s 311 non-emergency hotline) are down about 13% compared to last year. It is still a staggering number – from Jan-Aug 2009, New York tracked 22,459 bedbug related calls. Bedbugs are so tough to solve, but everyone is taking the problem very seriously – in July city officials appropriated $500,000 to fund anti-bedbug programs.
Do you think legislation will help? What else can be done?

Yes, we do believe that legislation will help.
This is much too large of an issue for just any one (or even many!) private exterminator companies to handle. The full weight of City and Federal level resources need to be mobilized against bed bugs if we are to make a dent in their almost unstoppable advance across America.
