Manage Your Property Like a Dog
Posted on 12. Apr, 2011 by Lisa Trosien in Business
I’m fairly new to dog ownership. We actually got Izzy on August 12, 2010. And aside from absolutely adoring my little pup, I’ve learned a lot from her as well, especially when it comes to managing properties (believe it or not). So seriously, start managing like a dog. Here you go:
Notice Everything
My dog sees everything when I take her outside for a walk. She can spot a piece of trash, see changes to the landscaping and is our very own Neighborhood Watch. She doesn’t take anything for granted when she ‘tours’ our property (yard). Are you as on top of things as she is?
Be Grateful
Izzy appreciates everyone who pets her, talks to her, walks her, gives her a treat and more. She truly is grateful for the people in her life and she shows it in every interaction. Are you grateful to your residents? Your co-workers? Your vendors? And do you show it when you interact with them?
Enjoy What You Do
Whether it’s going for a walk, going to the groomers or just going O-U-T, Izzy absolutely enjoys life to the fullest. She treats every single thing she does like it’s an adventure. I sure wish more people did that! Think of what you’re missing by not enjoying your life and your job more, each and every day.
Be Loyal
While you may not agree with every policy and procedure your owner or management company has in place, it’s your job to support your company. Your company (and your residents) pay your salary; don’t forget that.
Play and Work With Equal Energy
You can get burned out in this business, there’s no doubt about it. It’s a very customer centric industry and we sometimes have days (and people) that really take the life out of us. So take the time to recharge, re-energize and refocus on yourself. Izzy plays till she’s ready to relax. And then she does exactly that – she lays down and takes a nap. And that’s okay.

Lisa –
GREAT post! I love the final paragraph especially. A lot of us could do well with taking a nap when we need to.

Thanks, Heather! Izzy really does make you realize that you can get total tunnel vision…she SEES and EXPERIENCES everything!

One other thing that comes to mind – be persistant! My dog always waited very patiently and unobtrusively for leftovers after dinner, but she always made sure that we knew she was there and in the end she always got leftovers. When you’re leasing, get the sale by following up but not being annoying. (I guess this would be the difference between a puppy and a well-trained dog!)
