Joe Biden rents his cottage to the U.S. Secret Service, which is paid to protect him while at his waterfront home in the Wilmington area in Delaware. The cottage came available when the previous tenant moved out and the Secret Service is now paying the same amount of rent. Some people are up in arms over the fact that tax money is paying the rent and Biden is collecting the checks from his Secret Service Agents.
“He should be afforded every single protection available to him and his family, as should every vice president and president. But … you’d think the vice president, who shepherded the deficit committee, would think twice about charging the Secret Service rent. Why would he need the money? I don’t get it,” says spokesperson Leslie Paige.
The cottage used to house Biden’s mother until she passed away in January 2010. At that point he had a private tenant but when they left, he began renting it to the Secret Service, which is required by law to protect the current and former national leaders and their families. By the time the Vice President’s term is concluded in the fall of 2013, he will stand to gain a total of $66,000 in rent money.
